Mediation Summer School

The Mediation Summer School is an annual, week-long intensive programme that incorporates theory with practice. Over the week, participants discover communication skills that are central to any intervention process, and learn about the ways that they handle conflict. There is discussion on the theories that underlie conflict and mediation practice in order to situate mediation among the various options of conflict intervention. Using icebreakers, skill building exercises, and role plays, participants put the lessons and theory into practice in a safe environment of their peers.
The goal of the Mediation Summer School is to introduce students to the major concepts of transformative mediation as it is practised today. With trained facilitators with years of combined experience in university, community, religious and organizational conflict and mediation, the Mediation Summer School intends to engage students with the same methods used in introductory conflict resolution programmes across North America. The skills learned at the Mediation Summer School are valuable across a range of professions, both within the field of mediation and beyond.
Over the past few years, the Mediation Summer School has attracted between 8-12 students each year from ISE’s MPhil in International Peace Studies, MPhil in Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation Studies, MPhil Intercultural Theology and Interreligious Studies, and the Diploma in Conflict and Dispute Resolution Studies.
