Sandy Row Area Urban Renewal
In the Sandy Row area of Belfast the Irish School of Ecumenics Trust is involved in one strand of a larger urban renewal project. The role of the ISET is to promote educational access by engaging parental involvement in raising children’s expectations, and to build a sense of community, confidence and capacity in the endeavour. ISET has worked to bring together and establish links between three Primary Schools – Fane Street, Blighfield and Donegall Road, and two Grammar Schools – Methodist College and Royal Belfast Academical Institution – whose principals and staff have now begun to work on an interactive programme for the top three classes of the primary schools children.
Evidence from the CEO of the Housing Executive and from the Principals indicated the difficulties previously experienced in sustaining parents’ interests and commitment beyond seeing to their children’s immediate schooling needs. ISET will make educational stimulation and participation its key aim for both parents and children.
